General Information about Waterford
Waterford got its start in the 9th century, when a group of Viking traders established an outpost here. They guarded this settlement on the River Suir for several hundred years and built Reginald’s Tower. The arrival of Anglo Norman kings transformed Waterford, and led to it ultimately receiving the first city charter in Ireland.
Today, Waterford is not nearly as well-known to tourists as other major Irish cities. Even so, it remains the fifth-largest city in the country and boasts a spectacular collection of museums—the ‘Waterford Treasures’ exhibits. These are found around the city centre at Reginald’s Tower (Viking Waterford), Cathedral Square (Medieval Waterford) and Bishop’s Palace (Georgian Waterford).
But there’s much more to Waterford than well-curated museums. The city has an international reputation for crystal production, and there are two showrooms worth investigating: Waterford Crystal Factory and Penrose Crystal. Furthermore, if you have a Waterford hire car at your disposal, it’s easy to plan an escape to the Copper Coast (a UNESCO Geopark), the Comeragh Mountains or the fishing village of Dunmore East.
