Getting around Galway is relatively easy, as the city centre is compact and highly walk-able. Indeed, much of the this city’s charm is tied up in the fact that you can stroll from one museum or art gallery to the next, taking time to watch a street performer at Eyre Square or to stop by a café or pub for a recharge. Attractions in and around the city centre include historic homes, medieval ruins and centuries-old churches.
No visit to Galway is complete without at least one or two escapes into the countryside. Connemara is a particularly popular destination. This stretch of fluted coastline is dotted with quaint fishing villages where many locals still speak the old Irish language. Stop by a pub in Connemara, and you’re as likely to hear Gaelic as English.
The Aran Islands are another popular stop-off. A 40-km drive west to the sea will deliver you to the ferry departure point, where you can leave your car while you visit the islands. The highlight of these islands is Dun Aengus—one of Ireland’s most awe-inspiring prehistoric forts.
