General Information about Cork Airport
Cork is one of Ireland’s most important airports—second only to Dublin. Its growth has been impressive over the past decade, especially since the 2006 opening of its new-and-improved terminal. Today, it offers a full suite of facilities including several restaurants and a comprehensive shopping concourse known as The Loop. The airport’s food court is modelled after the English Market in Cork and features a variety of regional delicacies such as smoked salmon and artisanal cheeses.
Cork Airport sees an annual average throughput of well over 2 million passengers (some years much closer to 3 million). This works out to approximately 7,000 passengers each day, spread across a total of as many as 60 aircraft movements. Cork may be a regional outpost, but the airport sees much more than its fair share of traffic. Aer Lingus, Jet2.com and Ryanair are the three principle carriers operating out of Cork Airport.
At present, the airport is still under the jurisdiction of the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA), though plans are in motion to pass this responsibility along to the newly formed local authority. At present, airport proceedings are overseen by both, though the CAA is set to take sole responsibility in the near future.
