County Limerick Information
County Limerick is situated on the West Coast of Ireland. Limerick is surrounded by the counties of Kerry, Cork, Clare and Tipperary. The other border of Limerick is made up of the Shannon Estuary. The main geographical features of the county are dominated by the River Shannon estuary and her lakes. The Galtee Mountains which are situated to the South East of the County are also a very important geographic feature.
The history of Limerick dates back to 3500 BC as evidence by the megalithic remains at Duntryleague. However the majority of Limerick County wasn't settled until the arrival of Christianity and the subsequent establishment of monasteries in the county. The Vikings, who sailed up the river Shannon, began a settlement on the Shannon estuary which later became Limerick city.
