General Information about Cork City
Situated in the South of Ireland, Cork City is the second city of the Republic of Ireland with a population of approximately 274,000 people. The name of Cork is derived from the word corcach which when translated from Irish means marshy place which makes reference to its position on the banks of the River Lee. Cork is often referred to as the Rebel City due to its role during the Irish Civil War.
Patrick's Street is the main road which extends through the centre of the city, with Oliver Plunkett Street running approximately parallel to it. Both of these streets and the alleyways and lanes that link them encompass the busy downtown heart. Here you will find a vast selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. West of this is the English Market, where a number of international and local gastronomic delicacies can be bought. Cork has a status for being the culinary capital of Ireland, being home to some of the finest restaurants to be found anywhere in the country.
